The World of Orcas

Orcas and killer whales are the same thing. They are the largest member of the dolphin family. Did you know that males are bigger than elephants ? Orcas are 27 to 33 feet long. They weigh 8,000 to 12,000 pounds. Orcas are black and white. The black is on the top and the white is on the bottom. Did you know the dorsal fin can be 3 to 6 feet?

Sometimes orcas lose their teeth. If you count orcas teeth there will be 45. Isn’t that cool? Each tooth is about 3 inches.

Some orcas can swim faster than sharks. They can leap out of the water. That is called breaching. Some orcas slap their tails (flukes) on the waters surface. This
can cause penguins and sea lions to slide off the ice and into the water so they can eat them.

People trap orcas for no good reason because they want orcas to perform only for money.

Orcas can eat lots of stuff. This is what they eat, seals, squid, penguin, fish, dolphin and other kinds of whales. Killer whales hunt together. Orcas live and hunt in pods to herd fish. That makes them easier to get. Orcas hunt everything from fish to walruses-seals, sea lions, sea turtles and sharks.
