Manatees are sometimes called “gentle giants.” They are about 13 feet long. They weigh 1000 pounds. Manatees are grayish- green. They have thick, rough skin. They have a blimp shaped body. Their brain is the size of a softball. Manatees live to be about 60 years old.

Manatees are pregnant for about 12 to 14 months. Their calves are born in the water. Like other mammals, a calf nurses from its mother. A calf may begin snacking on plants when it is only a few weeks old.

A manatees only predator is people. Sometimes they were hunted for their meat and blubber.

Manatees are found in the United States in the state of Florida. It can also be found as far north as Virginia and as far west as Mississippi. Manatees are found in either salt water or fresh water. During the winter manatees are found in river bays. In the summer they travel to the East coast.
Manatees eat only plants. Their favorite foods include sea grasses, sea lettuce, and water hyacinths. They also eat mangrove leaves that fall into the water.

Manatees usually don’t dive deeper than 10 feet but they can dive to 33 feet.
