How Tiger Sharks Live

A tiger shark’s nickname is wastebasket of the sea. They eat anything like tin cans and wire. They also eat rays, urchins, sea turtles, marine mammals, lobster, squid, clams, reptiles, sea birds and other sharks. They are night hunters.

A tiger shark can grow up to 10-14 feet long. Tiger sharks are usually 850-1400 pounds. Much larger ones have been found. They are a dark gray brown on their backs and lighter on their bellies. The baby tiger shark has dark stripes on its back. They have three rows of teeth. They can hear a fish up to 1000 feet away.

A mother tiger shark has a live birth. She has 20-60 babies. They leave mom as soon as they are born. Pups are 18-19 inches long.

Tiger sharks don't have many predators. The baby sharks are sometimes eaten by adult tiger sharks and other sharks.

Tiger sharks are found in tropical waters world wide and in warm seas near the shoreline and open waters. Tiger sharks go from the surface to 1,200 feet.

There are more than 350 different kinds of sharks. Tiger sharks are related to wight tips, blue sharks, bull sharks, and gray reef sharks. Tiger sharks live to be 50 years old. Tiger sharks have a good sense of sight and smell. A tiger sharks nickname is wastebasket of the sea. Tiger sharks group up, this is called a school. Tiger sharks are solitary animals during mating. Tiger sharks have a special gill. They have razor sharp teeth.
